OCSU Canada Day Statement

Residential Schools are a part of Canada’s History. This year, we will be putting our Canada Day celebrations on hold in light of the recent findings of Indigenous children found on former residential school grounds across Canada. Although these reports are recent, Canada’s role in the oppression of Indigenous communities is not. OCSU is dedicating this time to remember and acknowledge all of Canada’s (known originally as Turtle Island by Indigenous peoples) history -- standing in solidarity with our Indigenous communities and all those impacted by this horrific truth. 

Decolonization practices, in favor of Indigenization, require meaningful change and tangible action items. This July 1st, take the time to read the 94 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report (2015), and consider which action items (of which there are many) have not been implemented in societal practices. OCSU is wearing orange to recognize and honour the thousands of Indigenous children forcibly taken to residential schools and as a tribute to the residential school survivors in Canada. #EveryChildMatters #WearOrangeOnCanadaDay
